Zero emissions and maximum power. How JCB invested over £100m to prove that the internal combustion engine is not dead but just evolving.
The construction industry is standing at a massive crossroads right now. We all know diesel has been the absolute king of heavy machinery for decades. It is reliable and powerful and you can find it everywhere. But we also know the world is changing and carbon targets are getting tighter every single day. The pressure to evolve is heavy. Most manufacturers panicked and went straight for batteries. They thought electric was the only answer. But the British giant JCB did something different. They took a huge gamble. They bet on the piston.
Here is the reality. For big heavy equipment batteries are a physics nightmare. If you want to power a 20 tonne excavator for a full 12 hour shift you need a battery pack that is so heavy and so expensive that the machine becomes useless. Lord Bamford saw this coming miles away. He basically said that batteries are great for your Sunday drive or a delivery van but they are useless for digging trenches in the mud for days on end.
So they built the hydrogen combustion engine. And the best part is that it is just an engine. It burns hydrogen gas instead of diesel. Nothing else. The only thing coming out of the exhaust pipe is steam. You could practically make a cup of tea with it.
For an operator this matters because there is zero learning curve. You jump in the cab and turn the key and it rumbles like an engine. It responds like an engine. It has the torque you expect. It just does not choke the guy standing in the trench next to you with black smoke.
And they solved the fuel problem too. They did not just wait for the government to build gas stations. They built a mobile refueler which is basically a gas truck that drives to your site. You fill up in minutes just like you did with red diesel. This is the bridge we needed between saving the planet and actually getting the job done.
